The town is an ideal base from which to explore the beauty of the area. It lies just one mile outside the Brecon Beacons National Park and 20 miles from the glorious beach at Cefn Sidan and the adjacent Pembrey Country Park.
The area is dotted with mediaeval castles. If you only have a chance to visit one in Wales then it has to be Carreg Cennen which is 3 miles out of town. The best view is across the valley from Y Mynydd Du. Other notable examples are Dinefwr Castle, once the royal stronghold of the Kingdom of Deheubarth (45 minute walk through the park) and Dryslwyn Castle (5 miles).
